Create a plugin for mediaelements.js to control the speed of an audio player

I'm using [login to view URL] to create an audio player for my website. They have a plugin that allows a media file to be sped up to different levels. Link to plugin: [login to view URL] I don't like how it's setup up for two reasons: First I don't like how in order to change the speed, it uses <input> to select a speed. Second, it's not great for mobile users as mediaelements wants you to select instead of clicking on a button to change the speed. When the plugin is activated, it looks like this: <button>show current speed</button> <ul> <li><input>Speed</input></li> <li><input>Speed</input></li> <li><input>Speed</input></li> <li><input>Speed</input></li> </ul> What I need is to allow a user to change the speed just by clicking on a button. I've already created a player doing just that: [login to view URL] so I guess the easiest way to describe what I need done is to change the way the speed button is changed from using <ul><li><input> to be able to change the speed by clicking on a button.
