Display Icon if Users Logged In

I have to sets of users in two different tables. One table holds user names and primary key fr users another table holds artist names and a primary key for artists I need a function that displays an icon if a user or artist is online. I'm not sure the best way to do this since there are two tables beng used. You will probably want to use a new table - the holds the values of 1=user online 0 =user not online. The function can register the user as being online using session variabls on the login page. One login page for artists ad one login page for users. When a recordset of users is displayed like [login to view URL] it should show whether the user is online or not.
