170597 Drupal Portal Site

Hi, The basics of Drupal I am very familiar with, but I don't know specifically which modules I require and how to configure them to achieve the kind of site I am looking for. I need the site to be a portal which displays products and information on the frontpage and then allows the user to view information about the product and finally purchase it. Now, I know there are a few modules which do this already such as the e-commerce module and the ubercart module, but I would like to hear your opinions on the best way to do this. Please use the PMB as I can provide a link to the type of site I am after. Please note this is NOT for a theme/template to be created, but for the functionality/features to be implemented.
