I have developed the backup system of OpenStack cloud. so backup storage is installed in NAS Server far away from OpenStack controller. All backup data used to backup to the NAS periodically on VPN tunnel by using OpenVPN. Also I have customized OpenVPN for the xtream code project. My similar experiences will help your project.
