Hi How I usually work is I perform a UX review/audit on the site and see what problems I come across. From there I take a look at your analytics and if possible perform more tests with users or a small testing panel. This is done to hopefully back up the problems I have found to make sure they are actually problems and not just something I have picked up (you only need 3-5 testers to discover most usability errors) From there we work on a plan and wireframes for a design solution.
