There are some php functions that were eliminated in the php 7 and above. They simply need to be tracked and replaced with the new ones. Also the old code might generate a lot of warnings and notices in the new version of php. This is usually a straight forward work. The best way to do it is to download the entire site code and then execute the search for most common functions and replace them one by one. Because every site has unique code and might have a different set of functions that need to be looked at. Then try to change the php version to 7.2 in the local server and test if there are any errors and fix them all. And only then upload the changed files back to the server so when the php version change occurs it goes smoothly. For testing I might need an OC admin access if the php change affects the back end as well.

"Updating" to the latest version may sound really simple and an easy ride but let me tell you it's not that easy and simple as it sounds to be. We have handled numerous such updates in the recent past and are also working on a couple of projects where the clients have changed server and in the new server their websites are not supported just because the PHP version is not matching, the client has the site on the older version of php whereas the new server supports PHP7. So we are helping them troubleshoot the issues as well. What am saying is, we have done this on numerous occasions and see no reason why we can't help you with this.
