I have the need to maintain, optimize and fix some faulty design of a Microsft SQL Server 2008 database of about 140 tables and 60 views, occupies about 200gb. The database, despite its size, is EXTREMELY SIMPLE, there are no particular complexity.
The application must necessarily be "always available", is not thinkable lontamente turn it off to do maintenance, for that reason, all operations must be properly designed taking ALWAYS mind that they can not keep the car occupied for more than a few minutes. No interventions "database normalization," understood as a division of tables in sub or groupings of existing tables are required.
The problem to be solved is the lack of foreign keys, the use of primary keys, in association tables, pairs of columns or triple the single primary keys of related entities, all as (unnecessarily) GUID. Moreover, almost all of the columns are erroneously set as nullable.
In the light of these considerations, the goal is that project is to generate one or more scripts for:
- Creation or correction of the primary keys (removing existing and inserting new columns as simple INT IDENTITY);
- The inclusion of foreign keys;
- Correction of the data types of the columns (by setting not nullable if necessary, by changing where possible, data types lighter;
- Optimization of views;
- Creating indexes;
- If necessary you will have to provide for the "cleansing" of tables for the removal of dirty records that do not permit the inclusion of the constraints, of course, this activity must be agreed upon to assess whether the inclusion of such constraints is really essential.
It 'important that as a result of the work you produce one or more scripts that can be run without having to crash the server or completely freeze frame the machine, in private will be notified of the exact configuration but I guarantee that it is properly sized.
