Over the past three days, more than 9,400 readers helped pick a slogan for Uncle Sam Rounseville’s billboard in Quincy. The winning entry is, “Your vote is your voice, speak up!” It was the choice of 52 percent of the voters. Two readers came up with the same slogan: Theresa Doherty of Weymouth and Richard Meredith of Quincy. The $1,776 prize was awarded by a drawing to Doherty. The slogan will go up this week on Uncle Sam’s billboard at the corner of Newport Avenue and Beale Street. Doherty, 44, is a kitchen and bath designer for Ciarlone Brotheers in Weymouth. She has two children, Andrew, 21, who is stationed at the Army’s Fort Lewis, Wash., and Abigail, 9. She grew up in Weymouth and graduated from Weymouth High in 1982. An Army brat herself, she served in the Army for nine years, most of the time at Fort Benning, Ga. She returned to Weymouth two years ago. Doherty didn’t find out about the contest until a few hours before the deadline, and was among the last five people to enter it. She never expected to win, but when Rounseville called her Monday morning and she saw the last four digits of his photo number -- 1776 -- she was thrilled. She said most of the money is going to bills. When her boyfriend asked if she planned to do something nice for herself with the windfall, she told him, “I do have an eye appointment tomorrow.” She’ll get a pair of prescription sunglasses to replace a scratched pair. Rounseville said he hopes the contest helps spur interest in voting. “I hope all the people who voted in the contest get out and vote on Nov. 4,” he said. “That’s how your voice is heard. There were 682 entries in the contest from seven states. One slogan came from Sweden. Readers voted online and by phone, starting with 10 slogans picked by Uncle Sam and his wife, Jean Kenney Rounseville; Thomas and Marjorie Corcoran, owners of Media Reps in Braintree; and Ken Johnson, the Ledger’s online editor. Two or three entries were eliminated each day last week. The runner-up in the contest was Kenny MacDonald, who suggested, “Don’t let others speak for you.
