This problem is likely a server misconfiguration. PHP doesn't care if the webserver is on http or https, it will still output code regardless. You don't mention which webserver program you are using, but if NGINX then you likely don't have the PHP forward configuration in the ssl server section of the website. Or, you have not correctly configured the SSL section of the configuration file. At command line, with admin privileges, run nginx -t and see which errors come up. If Apache, I can't help as I haven't used it for any serious web application in years.
