It is good idea fitting a shaft in a Gear, using a thermal expansion method. I can help you using numeric calculations on excel for one dimensional heat transfer. And by using expansion modulus calculating the radial expansion of shaft outside of the gear, and stress on part of the shaft in the gear (Assuming that heat convection from gear is much less than heat conduction through the shaft.)
