Contest Brief

My business is called "Switched On Support". I provide tech support for home users in the rural UK. At the moment this mainly involves helping tech phobic seniors get to grips with their laptops, desktops, smartphones and tablets. I also help them with their home networking and home entertainment systems. The business is still in its infancy but I envisage taking on small businesses as well, and even branching into marketing for pubs and restaurants as a secondary revenue stream. (I have a background in hospitality as well as IT.)

I need a logo designed, and two business cards (generic business card for flyering + a personal card for giving to customers) and a letter header. The design will form the basis of the companies visual identity, and I am keen to create a strong recognizable brand. All too often small tech support business look dated and feature clip art style logos. I'm keen to throw this out the windows, and have something modern, professional and slick.

For the logo, I envisage a two part design consisting of a logo + wordmark. The two elements should fit together well, but equally well sit separately on their own. The design should be fairly minimalist using a couple of different colours, and work equally well in black and white. It should be something that can be easily put onto t-shirts, stuck onto the side of a van, turned into stickers for putting on repaired laptops etc.

The immediate idea that comes to mind for the logo is, of course, a light bulb or a light switch, though I'm looking for something more original than that- it seems rather unimaginative. I'm keen on the idea of playing with the double meaning of Switched On - meaning intelligent as well as in the electrical sense. The logo could even be quite abstract, perhaps using some form of mascot that can be reused through out the brand. One idea I had was to use an owl as the logo, thinking of the wise owl in Winnie the Pooh, though it would be important to make sure it was nothing like either the Duolingo owl on the Hootsuite one! Another idea to possibly play around with is maybe a firefly which could be fun to experiment with. Switched On Support also has the acronym S.O.S. which could be played into the design somehow, though this isn't essential. (Maybe the O can be a life preserver?) Most of all I'm looking for something creative, stylish, clean and unique. An element of playfulness in the design would also be good to convey friendliness and approachability, though I don't want it to be cartoony. I'm looking for a modern flat design - so no 3d please. Having said all of this, you are the designer so feel free to take things in a different direction if you have a good idea. You don't need to take my suggestions as gospel, they are just some ideas I have been kicking around.

The design should also establish the colour scheme used by the brand, which will then be used in the design for the website. Any colours are accepted, but I'm leaning toward bold colours so that the business card stands out when thrown on a desk with a pile of others.

I foresee that I will have further design projects if the partnership proves successful. I will certainly be looking for a designer to help me with the website in due course.

For now, I am looking for:

- Design of company logo
- Design of generic business card
- Design of personal business card
- Establish business visual identity (logo + colour scheme and fonts)
- Design business letter header

For the business address / number etc. please use holder text for now. I will provide all necessary information to the winning entry.

Submissions need only include the logo and proposal for the visual identity. Once I have chosen the winner, we will finalize the logo, before working together on the business cards and letter header.
