Create an Electronic Version of a Vintage Firefighter's Logo

  • Status: Closed
  • Prize: $237
  • Entries Received: 16
  • Winner: xetus

Contest Brief

The client is a firefighter's association that needs to have their historical logo recreated electronically. The original logo was created on a faux stained-glass sign, which has some age-related damage. Additionally, some of the original elements have deteriorated with age.

The final product will be used in print and video media as a part of a total branding package

The designer that is selected for this project will need to create a new logo, based upon the style of the historical logo, incorporating the following specific elements:

o Circular outer border incorporating the words "Suncoast Professional Firefighters & Paramedics" and "Local 2546"
o Male firefighter wearing a vintage firefighter's helmet
o Stylized "flame" background behind the firefighter. This element should not be photo-realistic, but should have the same design style as the other elements
o Integration of the words "IAFF" and "2546" in a manner that is stylistically consistent with the design
o Color pallet should as close to the original design as possible, with the caveat that minor adjustments may be made in order to create a professional brand/design

The designer that is selected should also provide mock-up images and designs to illustrate how the final product will look on a variety of materials, such as letterhead, business cards and casual apparel.

Does not matter that the original silhouette is twisted? It does not have the correct and real proportions of a face, we keep it too?

    Designers:

For your reference, here is a link to a shirt the client had made previously:

Please note that the wording is incorrect in the reference photo, the physical defects are still present and there is a distressed pattern applied – all of which SHOULD NOT be replicated.

    Thanks

    Designers:

I have shown all the entries to the client and they have provided the following guidance:

The goal of this contest was not to re-design the logo. We want to stay true to the shape and style of the original logo. The winning entry will integrate the original design exactly as-is, with the exception of fixing the cracks and imperfections that are present on the original sign.

The outline of the firefighter should be exactly as in the original. The facial details should be exactly as in the original. The detail on the front of the helmet in the “shield” area should be exactly as in the original. The font of the outside text should be sans serif and of a style that fits the image thematically. The text should read “Suncoast Professional Firefighters & Paramedics”, wrapped around the outside of the center image and then “Local 2546” centered on the bottom, also wrapped around the outside. The flames should retain the same basic shape of those in the original – they do not have to be solid yellow and a flame-like gradient is acceptable, but there should not be two separate colors (e.g. yellow and red). Finally, the purple background should be kept, but there is some leeway in the specific hue so that the overall color pallet is cohesive.

    Thanks!

Designers - I have noticed than many of the entries have not changed the text on the outside of the logo to reflect the name change specified in the design document. It should say Suncoast Professional Firefighters & Paramedics, not Sarasota Professional Fire Fighters. Also, the face of the firefighter should be in shadow, as if he were back-lit by the fire. The eyes are purposely not illustrated, because of the shadow thrown by the brim of his helmet. Finally, don’t mistake the shadow from the helmet for a face shield or goggles - he should not be drawn with either.

We are hoping to strike a balance. It is important to keep the heritage and history of the original. That being said, it may not be suitable for use in print or online as it was designed. The winning design will have found a way to accommodate both.

All Designers: Please note that the cracked/distressed portions of the firefighter's silhouette in the photo provided in the design document are damage to the original sign and should NOT be incorporated into your final submission.
