Contest Brief

What We Need

We need a 2d logo turned in to a 3d version of the logo. The logo is for a Zombie MMO game called Walkers. We would like the logo to have a realistic look to it. The more realistic looking the product the more consideration your work will receive.

We would also like to see the finished logo in a logo reveal by doing this you also set yourself up for the possibility of future work as we are a start up in need of 3d design artist / modelers and animators so consider your entries as your interview for a possible job offer of a paid position with us. We are most interested in the talent behind the design. Creative use of camera angles and close up camera pass by shots is a plus.

The Concept

(edit: there was some discussion that I was not being clear so i am trying to accommodate that here)
use the image as a reference to create a 3d piece of flesh on this piece of flesh (please reference the font) overlay the Walkers text so it looks like it is carved in the flesh. do not extrude text as we want the piece of flesh to be the 3d part and the font to look like it is carved in to it.(end Edit) hope that is more clear thanks!

The concept behind the logo is a torn off piece of flesh with the word "Walkers" carved into it as you will see in the reference piece. Gore and realism are always a good thing here we want to set up a sense of fear and have creepy atmosphere. All entries should use highly detailed textures Again we are going for realism.

We have Provided a reference file of the logo the rest is up to you (edit)(please make note of this line--->). you may have some creative freedom however the basic concept must remain in your entry.

The Font used is called FFF Tusj
it can be downloaded here if you want to use a font in your design or if you need it fro reference http://www.dafont.com/fff-tusj.font

The Requirements

Ok so I am Going to add some more info here cause it seems I was unclear design a 3d piece of skin (which will be used as the logo not a background) The 3d piece of skin should look like a chunk of Skin/Flesh was Ripped From a person we would like to see some variation in the layers of the skin (maybe a little bit of muscle hanging out of the side or something) imagine the flesh laying on the table it should show like it is a quarter inch thick or so. you can shape it similar to the reference image if you like then imagine you took a razor blade and carved the word Walkers into it.Basically take the image we provided and make it into a 3d logo add some depth and layers to it then using the font overlay it on the chunk of flesh so it looks like someone cut it in there.

While the requirements for this project are specific If you have a portfolio please supply links for us we are looking for artists that can do realistic 3d design of Characters, Environments, and Objects.

All winning entries must be willing to provide the following

A high res still render of the 3d logo with a transparent background
A 3d obj file in an industry standard format ( we understand artist use many different platforms such as Maya, 3ds Max, Mudbox, Zbrush, Ect.)
An After Effects Project File and all footage, and assets for sed project file

The Reward

The Actual reward amount is not what's important here your aim should be to secure an offer of extended work there are paid positions available which include yearly salaries and profit sharing. In addition we have several smaller projects which we will be outsourcing so if a paid position dose not interest you we still have project based work available.

Our company will be doing several of these small contest to acquire artist and programers as it is an ideal way for us to see creativity and talent in a pressure and deadline situation.

Please take note if you are selected to be considered for a position you MUST sign an NDA to receive more information about the company and it's projects we have to protect our assets I'm sure you can understand this.

Ok just an update, WE ARE VERY CLOSE TO A DECISION! There has been a few new entries and being an artist I wouldn't feel right not giving them a chance to at least make some changes for us. Also i am still waiting on the changes from one of our front runners. We do have a team also deciding who we will be offering more work to and those people will receive Invitations to talk about the future work we will most likely set a very low payout on a contest or project and invite those individuals to it to talk about the possibilities. Thanks and good luck on the contest very nice work all of you.

We are extending the contest. It's not that we haven't found what we are looking for because we believe we have the extension is purely for the following reasons 1. We will be using this time to choose the finalist for the piece and to decide who we would like to offer positions to. 2. We will be honing the designs to get exactly what we want in the design and will be asking some of you to make minor adjustments to your pieces. 3. There were 4 artist that wished to submit an entry and we have not seen them yet this will be a 1 time extension and you can all be assured a winner will be chosen promptly on or before the extension runs out. The extension is however primarily due to the 2nd reason and we feel we need to give those artist so time to make the changes we want to see. We will be contacting those individuals shortly and requesting the changes needed. Thank you for your entries and good luck in this final round!

Listen I think we got off on the wrong foot here And I do apologize If I was a bit harsh. I was "defending" and I Kinda thought you were trolling me. The truth is we have many different positions available and at this point we are just getting started Our Company is a bit unique in that we don't mind if our devs work out of their homes as long as they can meet timelines. and I personally was a struggling artist and this site helped me get by. Now I have a chance to try and help some others "get by" while trying to create some great brands. And maybe you are right i do know the amount was a lil low but to be completely honest here I had to really push this idea on the other partners and my "test" budget is not the greatest so i need to run a few of these with the amount I have available to me to get the other partners to agree to do this all the time

I am off to a good start they can already see some value in this program. we may have at least 2 artist that fit the part of at least doing more work for us and i think we found a programmer from this group so its very promising. I think I would have liked to see your work on this piece and i hope in the coming days that you have a chance to participate in some of our contest and yes lol I am working on a bigger budget but i hope you understand now why its priced the way it is. and thank you for leaving a reply even though it does make me feel a little bad that i was a little harsh in it. I wish you all the best and like I said hopefully we can get to see your work even if its just with the intention to provide stuff every now and then keep in mind just because we offer someone a position doesn't mean they have to take it in fact i mentioned we need artist to work on individual projects from time to time so good luck in your endeavors

All of my designs are in 3d with transparent background. I havent turned on the transparency in ae but I can. I am aware of the fact that it is a logo and it needs transparent bg. So, dont worry it have transparent bg but just for showing you I have put a black solid bg. :)

@DanyJa Ok First, please allow me to address your comment, You Clearly did not read the Brief I did mention this information but I just edited it to try and be more clear as to our needs. Second, let me just say you are absolutely correct about the comment on the vertices and game assets but, I need to stop you there and ask you at what point in the brief did you read we wanted a game asset of the logo? I never asked for a game asset I asked for a Logo and Logo reveal. Next I would like to address your comments about our "test" First Nowhere did I ever say I wanted the best Pro 3d modelers Because That’s not what this is about.

Let me explain, You assume that I Just want to get cheap work done you say I need to prove "it" and by it I believe you are speaking of the possibility of future work which I will address in a moment, Before you drag my company through the mud you should consider for a moment that maybe there is a reason the prize is low I did not ask for pros to submit I personally know some pros and I guess I could be considered one myself I could very easily make this piece myself but that is not what this is about and apparently you consider yourself a "Pro" and take offense to this project.

I would have to ask that you stop and consider the bigger picture here for instance with a pro most of the time you get a pro attitude or pro ego I should know because I am friends with many do you have any concept on how many truly great artist actually make it in to the industry it is a difficult thing to accomplish I have a degree in professional video game art and I have a design and development background but it took someone giving me a break to get into the industry and all in trying to do here is pay it forward.

I’m looking for that person that just needs someone to believe in them to give them a break, that person that has the passion to do this kind of work but for whatever reason doesn't have the opportunity to break into the industry. That person who struggles to get noticed for their talent. The person who sits on here looking for that next job because they have bills to pay. The person that is always one job away from paying that next bill off or putting food on the table. Because you see that was me and someone gave me a chance I’m just looking to do the same, to pay it forward.

I used to be that person but now I am co-owner in a new studio, I am a board member of a new nonprofit with the sole mission to promote indie studios and indie devs, You sit here and tell me I have no idea about what I’m doing but you make a comment that makes you look un- intelligent making reference to best practices about game asset development when all we asked for was a logo and the amount of vertices and polys has no relevance. you criticize the amount of the award and say it’s to low I know how low it is and it was intended to be that low for a reason to keep people like you from having interest to submit because you are stuck on yourself with this holier than thow attitude and I don't know how good of an artist you are but frankly I just don't care because it's easy to see why you wouldn't be a good fit for our company.

For the rest of the freelancers I would simply ask yourself one question just decide for yourself if you have interest in this contest if you don't then that's great because it's your choice to enter or not there are so many available other contest and projects you can bid on and I wish you all the very best. But for those of you who get it and understand why the contest is priced the way it is I would like to welcome you to submit an entry.

As far as the comment to prove that there is a possible job or jobs available all I can say is No you can all decide for yourself what reason you will or won’t submit an entry for and if you don't believe there is a position available then don't submit and I wish you the best of luck on your future entries to other projects you design for but please keep you negative comments to yourselves as far as the amount of the contest it is but a starting place one I feel that is priced right for the purpose consider this you don't usually get paid for a possibility to work for a company and you wouldn't expect to get paid for an interview. I look forward to reviewing your entries and thank you for taking the time to check out our contest.

you didn't mention all these Fleshy details and stuff in description, you should do so cause i thought the word is extruded or something.. anyway if that's a test for the "best" 3D modeler what's the proof of what you said, if this design is only for 50$ sorry am not interested other than that you should prove what you said or you won't get the PRO's... anyway my comment on what you need is that it is a TERRIBLE practice to do what you said if you are a dev in a great company you should know that Tearing the skin in such a complex way using 3D mesh is COSTLY especially for games it needs thousands of vertices alone.. my friend this should be done by textures and bump or normal maps.

WOW. Agreed and really depth of detail. Well I will defend the ch here :) Cuz the design I made is based on textures and bump maps, It maybe crap though. :) and he didn't mentioned anything. Its up to the designer what he wants to use :). But I agree the amount of contest is low, Still you are not wasting your time too much. Sometimes its fun to participate in contests :)

My previous employer sold the project files to client as a separate cost and clients were happy to do so. It is potentially harmful to the company to hand over project files, as client can hand it over to someone else to continue the work, cutting of future work from that client. In my mind clients by the burger, not he recipe. But like I said I do understand that you have your requirements and I respect that. I do apologize for attempting to alter your requirements. Good luck with this project, I am an MMO enthusiast and will definitely keep an eye out for your game. Cheers.

Hello, You Can however part of the requirement is that we have a still of the logo with alpha or a transparent background. In other words if you have a way to provide us with a still of the logo with a transparent background ( I suppose a .Png or a Photoshop format would be fine would work or any thing for that matter we just need the 3d logo with transparency. Does that answer your question? if you look at the reference image it is a .png file with transparency. In any event we need a rework of the 2d logo to 3d not just the 2d reference in a 3d environment. I hope that helps.

@Manakiin Yes that is skin and the stitching is there to show the skin stitched together the stitching does not have to be present it was put in to add to the concept. So you can choose to use it or not what ever you feel looks better.
