Create an population database

Contest Brief

In this competition you should create a population database in MariaDB and PHP from an MS Access database (table) with population data. The population data comes from a Swedish municipality. The competition will be judged on the following criteria:

1. One of the most important parts of this contest is to create custom queries based on the population data that you have in tables. There should be a large collection of database queries without mess or clutter.

2. Graphical presentations of information should be good looking and easy to navigate. It is important to be able to see the information graphically. In both tables but also maps of Swedish municipalities.

3. The database should be logically structured with the ability to add more municipalities population data.

4. It must be possible to make comparisons between several different municipalities.

5. Extra points if you can make different future calculations based on database data.

Requirement:
The database will be created in MariaDB (formerly known as MySQL) and must be programmed in PHP. It's ok to make connections to Google's graphical interface for graphical presentations.

The presentation of features during the contest period will be done online on your own server.

New population data for future years must be possible to add.

I don't understand how you arityinfoway was just awarded. He barely did something. No predictions no nothing. He literally copypasted the database and just re-made my #1 without any additions. Why would you choose someone who is incapable of manipulating the data? Good luck with him because I bet you 10 bucks he won't be able to do any sort of predictions OR limit the statistics between a "user chosen elements" (e.g. just population/deaths or deaths/newborns)

I won't go into copying entries (that can be reported and a freelancer breaching this portal and contest rules can be penalized - and his entries removed) yet I also congratulate spylot for an innovative approach, going beyond or other way I would go for (D3.js based dashboard with GeoJSON for showing charts over Swedish maps). The winning entry can be made in an hour or two and is also worth that cost and not more.

So the spylot's effort was really beyond typical student approach "copy what I can found and try to persuade a client" (e.g. professor) and I'm impressed he actually did the work and explained it in an entry so all wannabe visualization freelancers can learn from it.

Still, for the serious visualization project the budget would have to be 5x bigger and the contest guaranteed to attract the best talent - what I have claimed at the start.

@mattsrinco: thank you for the words. also for talking about D3.js! (something I'll be checking out for future uses).

I suppose the reason why I'm irritated is because the winning entry did nothing but use Highcharts.com component-- just piggybacking on their stunning work and I'm more than certain arityinfoway doesn't own a license to work with it commercially and so Highcharts won't be benefitting at all from this, which is sad.

I suppose at the end of the day, I enjoyed working with this project from doing the logic functions to designing it. However, totally upset that people can piggyback and pretend they did something as of value.

I want to thank spylot for your fine work and the time you spent on this competition. You are very innovative and made different versions indicating that you are very talented and has a good drive. But I went on the safe version and got a working application directly. This I can use and develop on the basis of my needs. Had I chosen spylots proposals it would have required a lot of development before I could use it for my needs.

But I hope to hire spylot in the future because I think that you have an incredible drive. I have put you on my to hire list so that I may send some projects your way.

I appreciate what you said. I suppose this is a lesson not to assume a website will be presented for the public.

Mattsrinc: You have invested a lot of time following and commenting on this competition. If you had put that time into developing something i 2 hours or so you would have got a entry that could be in the race for the prize. If you are as fast as you say you would have 50 usd an hour at least.

Thanks for the words! http://spacelantern.com/clients/population/#selectyears that's a dynamic graph that communicate directly with the database, you can see at https://gionkunz.github.io/chartist-js/examples.html all the other charts that can be used. Anyway, I'm afraid I'm going to put this as the limit as far as I will go for my draft entry.

IS PHP, mandatory - Can we do this only with the excel file or only with the access file ? Or even I can do this in HTML5 by using the responsive website. Please do let me know the reason for only PHP

Thank you spylot! Very impressive work so far! I like the dashboard stile! I would like to have a better focus on the possibility to compare the years and to se graphs of multiply years.

I definitly like it being as a contest than a project. Efficiently weeds out all the incompetent people, lol. As I love manipulating data and displaying them, I guess this is going to be fun.
